Madrid is a lively city brimming with people, and has always been amongst the favorite destinations for holidays in Europe.
Getting around here is relatively easy with the Metro system and if the city becomes overwhelming a walk through Parque del Retiro can be a nice escape.
Madrid Attractions
The city is reputed for its abundance of Museums. The main three being the Prado Museum, the "Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza" and the Reina Sofia Museum, which comprise the famous "Golden Triangle of Art" that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Other notable attractions to visit in Madrid include the Plaza Mayor (arguably the grandest square in all of Europe) and the Royal Palace, which is built entirely from granite and colemnar stone - designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Sachetti. Plaza Mayor was traditionally the site for all religious and public ceremonies in Madrid. It is now a popular area for locals and tourists alike, with a variety of restaurants and cafés to enjoy.
To experience the splendor of Spanish bullfights, consider a visit to 'Las Ventas', the largest bullfighting arena in all of Spain, with a capacity to seat over 20,000 people.
Madrid Transport
One way to explore Madrid is to ask for a map of the city at your hotel in Madrid and mark all the main tourist attractions. Some hotels in Madrid may even offer locally arranged private tours of the main tourist areas, as an optional extra.
If you prefer a do it yourself tour, you can rent a car, a bicycle walk or use the metro. You can buy an individual ticket for travel anywhere on the metro, priced at roughly 2 euros. This is valid on any day of the week for a single journey.
For multiple trips between zones or day tickets prices will vary. The most advisable thing to do is to obtain a metro map from your hotel or nearest station, mark the nearest stop to your hotel and work from there.
If all else fails there are stewards present in metro stations who will assist you if necessary.
